Axolotls in Real Life
Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) are critically endangered amphibians native to the lake complex of Xochimilco near Mexico City. Unlike most amphibians, they remain in their larval form throughout life, a condition called neoteny, and retain external gills and a fully aquatic lifestyle.
Axolotls are popular in research due to their extraordinary ability to regenerate limbs, spinal cords, and even parts of their brains. Their playful appearance and rarity have made them beloved in both science and popular culture.
